The Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is the most accessible AWS certification. It does not require hands-on technical skills or coding ability — it tests your conceptual understanding of AWS services, cloud concepts, security fundamentals, and pricing models.

That said, do not underestimate it. The exam has 65 questions, a 90-minute time limit, and a 70% passing threshold. People who study casually for a few days often fail on the security and pricing domains, which together account for 54% of the exam.

Week-by-Week Study Plan (4 Weeks)

This plan assumes you are starting from scratch with no cloud experience, studying about 1-2 hours per day. If you have IT experience, you can compress this into 2 weeks by doubling the daily study time.

Week 1: Cloud Concepts and Global Infrastructure

Focus this week on understanding what cloud computing is and how AWS is structured. You need to internalize the core value propositions — elasticity, pay-as-you-go pricing, global reach, agility — because these concepts appear across every domain of the exam.

Study the AWS global infrastructure: regions, availability zones, edge locations, and how they relate to high availability and disaster recovery. Understand the difference between public, private, and hybrid cloud deployment models.

Cover the AWS Well-Architected Framework and its six pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability. You do not need to memorize every detail, but you should understand what each pillar prioritizes.

By the end of week 1 you should be able to explain why a company would choose cloud over on-premises, describe the AWS shared responsibility model at a high level, and name at least 15 AWS services and their primary purpose.

Week 2: Security and Compliance (30% of the Exam)

Master the Shared Responsibility Model — this is the single most important concept on the exam. AWS is responsible for security "of" the cloud (physical infrastructure, hardware, networking). Study IAM in depth: users, groups, roles, policies, the root account, multi-factor authentication, and the principle of least privilege. Understand when to use IAM roles vs. IAM users vs. federation.

Storage: S3 (object storage — learn the storage classes), EBS (block storage for EC2), EFS (file storage), S3 Glacier (archive). Understand durability vs. availability and when to use each storage type.

If you are scoring 65-75% on practice tests, you need another week of targeted review on your weakest domains. Look at your practice exam results by topic and focus exclusively on the areas where you score lowest.

If you are scoring below 65%, you need more foundational study time. Go back to the video courses and documentation for the domains where you are struggling. Do not just take more practice exams hoping to memorize the answers — focus on understanding the concepts.

Do not over-study. The Cloud Practitioner exam is broad but shallow. Once you consistently pass practice exams with 80%+, book the real exam within a week. Waiting too long leads to forgetting material and losing motivation.
